Turkey Greece Conflict Over Natural Resources In Mediterranean Sea

The region in the Mediterranean Sea enriched the natural resources of gas and oil but unfortunately, the region considered disputed between Greece Turkey and Cyprus




On Thursday, French Military conducted Training exercises along with Greek Forces and France is boosting the military force in the region after Turkey announces the resume exploration of natural resources.





Greece's claim to the waters around Kastellorizo is based on a UN maritime convention endorsed by many countries, but not Turkey. Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias was due to fly to Israel on Thursday for talks, his office said, and will also address the issue with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Vienna on Friday. 



Senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, Charles Kupchan said "No wants to go for war and two NATO allies mix it up, Involvement of Military force keep the situation in a dangerous place.


Reasons behind the conflict

The beginning of this conflict is not as sudden as the Cold war between Greece and Turkey begins when Greece and Egypt Signed an agreement to set up the exclusive economic zone in the region which didn't accept by Turkey and the Turkish Foreign Ministry declared it "Null and Void". Turkey was diplomatically ignored when the regional energy deal took place in the presence of the energy ministers of  Egypt, Cyprus, Greece, Jordan, Israel, and Palestine all met in Cairo to discuss cooperation, the setting up of the East Med Gas Forum, and to look into the building of a large undersea pipeline that would funnel gas to Europe. Turkey was pointedly not invited.

That is not all, Greece, Egypt and Cyprus also denied the security agreement took place between Turkey and UN_recognized Government, Government of National Accord in Libya in November 2019 in which they used the continental shelf method, they allocated themselves blocks for drilling and gas exploration.

France is playing a "mediator" role between Greece and Turkey to stop the NATO allies from Military accident and taking precautionary steps by boosting its forces in the Mediterranean sea.
